#3 - A Night Time Stroll

PHOTOGRAPH:
This photograph was taken while on a night walk - purpose... to take photographs.

I love taking night shots. They are definitely the hardest, as the shutter speed needs to stay open longer and the camera must not move. This was a very tricky shot to get. But with the help of the swivel screen and the live view mode, I was able to capture exactly what I wanted.

CAMERA SPECS:
Nikon D5000
18 - 55 mm Lens
No filters

I used the no-flash automatic function for this photo.
Automatic focusing.

As stated above, the night time photographs are a lot harder to take. It is useful to bring a tripod for these events. Unfortunately, you`re not going to carry a clunky tripod at all times. I just leaned the camera against the railing to grab this shot. I used to do that blindly, but now with the swivel screen, it`s so much nicer. I no longer need to bend low to the ground!

As for shutter speed, think of it this way. When you stare at a window, the longer you stare, the better the imprint will be when you close your eyes. The camera works the same way. The longer the shutter speed (when you see 1/8, it means 1/8th of a second) the more light gets in the lens. Unfortunately, the camera will over expose upon longer shutter speeds, leading to completely white photos or over exposed photos. I would say that the shutter speed for this shot would be approx. 1 second. But as stated above, I used the auto function. I will eventually come to play with the manual function in a time soon to come!

Night time photos may be trickier to grab, but I find the end result to be so much more satisfactory.
